Alan spent over thirty years enjoying himself in BBC Research & Development at Kingswood Warren. Initially interested in sound, he became the BBC’s expert on getting the best out of cameras, ending up advising the European Broadcasting Union and camera manufacturers on video standards.

Alan talks engagingly of early work on TV standards converters and the evolution of digital TV from standard definition to HD, with passing references to the first ever use of film and how to get decent sound from inside a diver’s helmet.
