Michael joined the BBC in the radio record library. By chance he found himself doing some local radio before a job at the little-known Maida Vale film unit led to him becoming an assistant film editor, he occasionally did some voice overs. He joined World Service at Bush House and worked at Bush House for nearly twenty years as an announcer and news reader.

Mike joined School Radio as a Primary Geography producer in 1974 and remained in the department until 1996. As well as making programmes he helped develop interactive materials to go with them including software for the BBC Micro Computer.
